Global PC shipments fell 15.5% year-over-year in Q3,2022 reaching 71.1 million units, as per the latest report by Counterpoint Research. The report adds that the lull in PC demand continued in the quarter despite broad promotional activities from major OEMs, especially for consumer product lines. In addition, inventory digestion processes have been activated to deal with abnormally high levels as we enter the second half of the year.
Reasons for the decline in global PC shipments
The Counterpoint report reveals that the decline in global PC shipments was largely due to demand weakness across both consumer and commercial markets, which was mainly driven by global inflation. Despite components shortage issues being largely resolved, OEMs and ODMs are holding a relatively conservative view on Q4 2022 and the first half of 2023.
The report also adds that the lack of consumer demand in the back-to-school season, shrinking enterprise purchasing due to economic uncertainty and increasing promotional events all created a drag on Average Selling Price (ASP) growth momentum and also impacted PC market revenue.
How the companies performed
Lenovo witnessed a big decline in global PC shipments. Lenovo declined 16% YoY, in line with the worldwide PC market. However, Lenovo’s market share remained unchanged from last year. The company captured a 23.7% market share.
On the other hand, HP incurred a 27% decline and shipped 12.7 million units in Q3 for an 18% market share. Another popular brand — Dell had a 17% market share and a 20% YoY shipment drop. Dell sold 12 million units in Q3 2020.
Apple announced a 7% YoY increase in shipments, which was the opposite of what the market was expecting. This growth is attributed to the launch of a new product in late Q2.
